| As with any professional, you and your family
want to determine how an Independent College Counselor's services
will meet your college planning needs. Destination College &
Beyond recommends that you conduct an interview, either in-person
or via telephone, with any prospective ICC you're considering.
| 1. What kind of college
planning experience does the ICC have? |
| |
 |
Professional experience in
college planning counseling. |
| |
 |
A professionally
recognized certification or credential. |
| |
 |
A master's degree in a counseling
or related discipline. |
2. Does the ICC have experience as a high school
college planning counselor, as a college admission advisor or
other relevant experience that prepares them to work with you
and your family? 3. What other work and life experiences does
the ICC possess which supports their ability to provide college
planning counseling for you and your family?
| 4. How does the ICC stay current
with the rapidly changing secondary and post-secondary educational
environments? Ask if they: |
| |
 |
Are
members of professional college admissions associations. |
| |
 |
Attend
college admissions conferences, college fairs, counselor
camps, college information sessions and related activities.
|
| |
 |
Conduct
college visits on a regular basis. |
5. Can the ICC provide referrals and/or written
client testimonials? 6. Does the ICC have a written agreement outlining
the services to be provided, associated fee structure, policies
and provisions? Base your final decision on a combination
of the counselor's qualifications to provide college planning
services, their training, depth of experience, professional development,
client testimonials and how well you and your family relate to
the counselor's approach and personal demeanor.
